Internal Control Advisor

Your new role

As our new Internal Controller, you will become the expert on the use, maintenance and reporting of the internal controls system. Functionally ensuring the control system is operating and producing valid data, aligned to the organisational structure; monitoring its use by control operators and assurance/ validation teams; producing  reports from the system and working with the Senior Internal Control Manager to follow up on control issues. 

Initially this role will form part of a formal project group responsible for mapping and assessing internal controls, but once established, the role holder will become responsible for monitoring, reporting and advising on the internal control environment.Therefore the controller should be literate in the language of internal control  and able to work across a range of business areas recording controls. A clear understanding of internal control standards is essential, as is the ability to focus on  controls and be ruthlessly efficient in records, assessing design and uploading controls. The controller will agree upon documentation standards and ensure  these are rolled out to the business. 

Working with the Senior Internal Control Manager and others, the controller will map the key control environment of the business and work with business units to  agree upon relevant areas of enhanced control.  

Experience in training would be a significant advantage as the controller will work with the Senior Internal Control Manager to ensure the control standards, and  the use of the tool is rolled out to the relevant control operators, owners and reviewers. 

 

What you'll be doing

  • System Expertise: Oversee the use, maintenance, and reporting of the internal controls system, ensuring it produces valid data aligned with the organisation’s structure.
  • Monitoring & Oversight: Monitor system usage by control operators and assurance teams; follow up on control issues with the Senior Internal Control Manager.
  • Reporting: Produce regular reports on internal controls and assess their effectiveness across business units.
  • Control Mapping & Assessment: Participate in mapping and assessing internal controls, working with business units to identify areas for enhanced control.
  • Documentation: Set and enforce internal control documentation standards across the business, ensuring accurate record-keeping.
  • Training & Roll out: Support the roll out of control standards and tools; assist in training control operators and teams.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for control improvements and work to implement solutions.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Senior Internal Control Manager and other stakeholders on control-related issues.

The role is for you if...

  •  You have sound understanding of internal controls and an ability to work to an agreed controls standard. Documenting and agreeing controls with the business, identifying  remediations and gaps, and supporting in the remediation process. 
  • Experience of using controls software an advantage, but not essential as low technical input required 
  • Ability to train controls related topics to business and experience of training 
  • Outstanding task management. 
  • Strong relationship management 
  • Ownership and accountability as core skills/traits
  • Strong track record in internal controls or internal audit - no resprayed external auditors 
  • Significant experience in controls outside of finance real - ability to work within finance controls is essential, but just as much of the role will be in non-finance
